Maison de George Sand, Nohant, France Oct 7 - Nov 26, 2017
During the last decade of her life, George Sand maintained a remarkable friendship with Gustave Flaubert. It is difficult to imagine two more different personalities of their time. Flaubert's vision of the world was profoundly realist, opposed in all ways to that of George Sand, who was very much an idealist. As an intervention, Distillé is not meant to blend seamlessly with the house, in the same way that Flaubert's aesthetic did not seamlessly blend with Sand's. But just as Sand invited Flaubert into her home to have a discourse, the Maison de George Sand invited me to create a contemporary discourse. I was the inaugural artist invited to create an intervention at the Maison de George Sand.
