Thirteen Nights was a collabortation between two artists who shared an interest in building narrative structures through association, montage, and deconstruction. Beginning with Binion's examination of her past journals and archives of video footage that she had shot, the artists developed a set of scenes that used text, video, sound, and live action in various combinations. The work proceeded not from a plot- or subject-driven impetus, but from a concentration on the direct poetic potential of the materials, a process in which images, sounds, and activities came together in a poetic logic. The piece was structured as thirteen short succinct episodes or "nights". Each had its own media form-- some sections were video and performance, some sound and video, some sound only in darkness, and so on.
