Projects > Double Exhibition: Distillé / Searching for Emma

On May 22, 2021, my double exhibition Distillé / Searching for Emma opened at the Centre d’art contemporain de la Matmut near Rouen, France. The exhibition continues through September 19, 2021, so a full summer of visiting is possible at the unique site, a re-designed carriage house in the museum’s garden.

Distillé is a re-figuring of Gustave Flaubert’s novel Madame Bovary. It has continued to evolve during its various presentations since 2014, always in response to each new location. In the Charreterie, the core of the exhibition is the twenty-six photographs from Le Grand Livre, a wordless book of evocations. Suspended from the Charreterie’s rafters, they float in the atmosphere of three fragrances selected by Christine Nagel, the nez of the parfumier Hermès. From beyond the Charreterie, accessible by smartphone, are nine videos, many featuring actress Eponine Cuervo Moll, and two sound works by Lou Mallozzi.

Searching for Emma amplifies Distillé. It springs from the original but traces its own path. While exhibiting Distillé in Kyoto, I was enveloped in an unfamiliar culture and responded with a fantasy: “If I were to cast an imaginary film, could I find a new Emma Bovary here, in the streets of Kyoto?” The search became an elusive sequence of twenty images at an intimate scale, displayed on two long tables designed by Paris-based architect Marc Dilet, arranged from right to left like a Japanese scroll.

The glass periphery of the Charreterie is a transparent shell for these images, sounds and scents that allows the outside world to mix with the world of the imagination. The Letter, a version of Rodolphe’s traumatic note to Emma, is presented on six transparent panels hanging inside the glass walls. The largest element of the exhibition is the one most specific to the architecture of the Charreterie and also the most elusive, The Yellow Windows. On two 3-meter by 2-meter windows, I painted a translucent yellow wash in broad brushstrokes, giving the space a subtle glow in homage to Flaubert’s poetic use of the color in Madame Bovary.

In conjunction with this double exhibition, I have produced two new books focused on these two bodies of work, designed by Sam Silvio.
