This book was created during twenty-five days spent in France from November 5 to 30, 2025. Similar to my earlier book Italian Studies, this is a spontaneous record of time spent in a particular place. It was directly inspired by the encouragement of Sam Silvio, who, after our collaboration on Italian Studies, said, “Now it’s time for French Studies!” Although limited in territory and time, I had countless encounters, surprises, and invitations in France, intersecting with the complexities of the lives of friends and strangers. The mood of the place was fluid, sometimes enthralling, sometimes frightening, sometimes lonely, and always conveying a sense of the enchantment of the everyday. As I began to send Sam my photographs immediately after my return home, he responded by pairing the images based on his keen sense of form, color, gesture, and atmosphere. If I was the cinematographer, Sam was the editor. With this daily back and forth and fueled by Sam’s enthusiasm and analysis, a book was born. The next step was to invite French writers to respond to the photographs, to gain their insider impressions of my outsider perspective. Special thanks to Nadine Milhaud, Lou Mallozzi, Sam Silvio, Dorothée Zumstein, Bertrand Raison, Darin Walsh, Susan Goldschmidt, and D. Elizabeth Price.
