Projects > Waiting for small mysteries (2013)

single-channel video, silent, 1:35 loop

In Waiting for small mysteries, a stationary camera frames a view of a gently flowing tributary. This view appears at first quite simple, yet unveils the complexity of the eye’s engagement with water. Unlike the human eye which constantly decodes various depths and layers when it encounters a reflective surface, the camera eye maintains all the ambiguity of this aqueous gaze: the ripples on the surface, the undulating grasses beneath, and the reflected clouds above intermingle in a coherent yet multilayered image. In turn, the camera allows the viewer’s eye to suspend analysis, and instead to immerse itself in the water’s image and to float along in the passing moment. In 2016, this video became integrated into the project Distillé, inspired by Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary.
